CtrlAltFix LLC

Networks, cameras, security and IT support for homes and small businesses, set up properly and documented.

I design and secure the network behind your devices: firewalls, Wi-Fi, separate networks for smart devices, monitoring that tells you when something's wrong, and remote help when you need it. Serving the ArkLaTex from Louisiana, on evenings and weekends.

Services

What I can set up for you

firewall · router · Wi-Fi

Network design and installation

A business-grade firewall in place of the ISP router, managed switches and access points, and clean Cat6 runs to where you need them.

nmap · wireshark

Security assessments

A scan of every device on your network, a plain-English report of what's exposed or outdated, and a prioritized plan to fix it.

VLANs · DNS filtering

Smart-home isolation and privacy

Cameras, vacuums, TVs and voice assistants on their own network, kept away from your computers, with ad and tracker blocking for every device.

uptime · alerts

Monitoring and alerts

Push or email alerts when the internet drops, a service goes down, a new device joins, or something on the network looks suspicious.

docker · linux · tailscale

Home servers and self-hosting

Private photo backup, media and file servers on hardware you own, with secure remote access that doesn't open ports to the internet.

unifi protect · unvr

Security cameras

UniFi Protect camera systems that record locally on a UNVR, with no monthly subscription, on their own network away from your other devices.

epicor eagle

Point-of-sale support

Support for Epicor Eagle point-of-sale systems: registers, receipt printers, workstation setup and the network they depend on.

remote · on-site

IT support

Troubleshooting for PCs, printers, scanners and Wi-Fi, remotely through a secure session or on-site when it needs hands.

Recent project

Putting a shield around a family's home network

A busy household with more than 20 phones, computers, game consoles and smart gadgets, all sharing one wide-open network.

Before Before: hidden scans and trackers reach every device in the home ! !
Wide open. Hidden scans and trackers could reach every device, and an outdated robot vacuum left a back door open.
After After: a firewall shield blocks the scans, and smart devices live in their own room FAMILYSMARTGUEST
Protected. A firewall blocks the prying eyes at the door, and smart gadgets live in their own room, away from the family's computers.

What the family gets

  • Strangers' scans and known-bad websites are stopped before they reach the house.
  • Smart gadgets can't snoop on computers or phones, even if one gets hacked.
  • Fewer ads and trackers on every device, including TVs and tablets.
  • Kid-safe search on the kids' devices.
  • A text alert if the internet goes down or something looks suspicious.
  • A one-page guide to how everything is set up.

How a project runs

Four steps, with nothing left undocumented

  1. Assess

Scan and inventory every device, then list what's exposed, outdated or misconfigured.

  2. Plan

Agree on networks, equipment and budget before anything is bought or changed.

  3. Build

Stage the firewall and switches first, then cut over at a quiet time so nobody loses internet mid-task.

  4. Hand off

Test everything, set up alerts, and leave you a cheat sheet of every address, rule and login location.

About

Hi, I'm Chris

I run CtrlAltFix LLC, an IT business for households and small businesses across the ArkLaTex. I bring deep, hands-on experience with enterprise Ubiquiti systems at scale: managed switching, wireless access points, UNVRs and Protect cameras across large, multi-building networks.

I also know Epicor Eagle point-of-sale systems inside and out, from registers and receipt printers to the network they depend on.

I build networks the way I build my own: segmented, monitored, and written down, so you're never dependent on one person remembering how it works.
